How to Verify a Chinese Jacket Manufacturer Before Placing an Order (Certifications, Audits, Red Flags)

TL;DR: Verify a Chinese jacket manufacturer in five layers: (1) the business license — registered name, address and scope; (2) certificates looked up on the issuer’s database, not just a PDF; (3) lab test reports for the fabric you’ll actually get; (4) a live video walk-through or third-party audit of the sewing floor; (5) payment terms that don’t demand 100% upfront on bulk. The biggest red flags are certificates that don’t match the license name, “audits in progress” with no booking, and a factory that won’t show its floor on video. Below is the full checklist — and PTOUTWEAR’s own details, so you can practice on us.

Data marked OUR FLOOR is PTOUTWEAR’s own verifiable information (Pt Outdoor Products Factory, est. 2013-12, 240 workers, 3,000 m², 20 sewing lines, ~200,000 jackets/year). Data marked INDUSTRY is typical practice across China apparel sourcing, for benchmarking. Last updated: September 2026.

What should I check first when verifying a Chinese factory?

The business license: the registered name, address and business scope must match everything else the supplier sends you. Checklist:

CheckHowRed flag
Registered Chinese company nameAsk for a license copy; look it up on China’s national enterprise credit system or through a verification serviceName on invoice/bank account ≠ license
Establishment dateOn the license“20 years’ experience” on a 2-year-old company
Registered address vs factory addressCompare license with the address you’d visitDifferent addresses with no explanation
Business scopeShould include garment / outdoor product manufacturingScope is only “trading” but claims to own a factory
Bank account holderMust be the licensed companyPayment to a personal account

Practice on us (OUR FLOOR): registered name 台州市黄岩帕特户外用品厂 (Pt Outdoor Products Factory), established 2013-12-13. The license is registered in Huangyan District, Taizhou; production runs in Sanmen County, Taizhou, with an international trade office in Yiwu. A registered address that differs from the production site is common in China — what matters is that the supplier tells you before you find it.

How do I check whether certifications are real?

Look every certificate up with the issuing body, check the holder name matches the license, and treat “in progress” as “not held.”

Certificate typeHow to verifyRed flag
ISO 9001Certificate number on the certification body’s databaseHolder name ≠ license; expired date
SGS / Intertek / BV test reportReport number verified with the labReport for a different fabric or a different company
OEKO-TEX Standard 100Label check on the OEKO-TEX websiteLogo on the website, no certificate number
BSCI / amforiAudit result via amfori“Audit in progress” with no audit date
GRS / bluesignIssuer’s public databaseClaimed for all fabrics rather than specific materials

Practice on us (OUR FLOOR): we hold ISO 9001, SGS test reports, and run PFC-free DWR (documented by the fabric mill). OEKO-TEX, BSCI, GRS and bluesign are planned, not held — no application filed, no audit booked. A factory that tells you what it doesn’t have is easier to trust than one with eight logos and no numbers. See certifications.

How can I check the factory is real without flying to China?

A live, unscripted video walk-through first; a third-party inspection before the balance payment.

On video, ask to see the machines your product needs. For waterproof jackets that means seam-taping machines — we run 5 seam-taping/bonding machines and 3 waterproof zipper machines alongside 50 lockstitch and 20 overlock machines (OUR FLOOR).

What quality evidence should a factory send before bulk?

An approved physical sample, a stated AQL level, and photo/video QC before you pay the balance.

What are the biggest red flags?

INDUSTRY-typical warning signs, roughly in order of how often they cost buyers money:

  1. 100% upfront payment on bulk. Standard is a deposit plus balance before shipment — ours is 30% / 70% (OUR FLOOR).
  2. Payment to a personal or offshore account not matching the license.
  3. Certificates without numbers, or holder names that don’t match.
  4. “Audits in progress” with no booked date — treat as not held.
  5. No live video of the sewing floor, only stock photos.
  6. Prices far below the market band for the spec (custom softshell well under ~$14 FOB usually means blank stock).
  7. “No MOQ” for cut-and-sew — usually print-on-demand or blank stock with a logo.
  8. Vague trade terms — the quote should state FOB, EXW or DDP. Ours default to EXW, with FOB Ningbo or DDP quoted on request.

FAQ

Is a trading company a red flag?

No — but it should say it’s a trading company. The red flag is a trader presenting itself as the factory. Check business scope on the license.

How much does a third-party inspection cost?

Typically $300–500 per pre-shipment audit through SGS, Intertek or BV; we arrange it on request or work with your nominated inspector.

Can I see your factory before ordering?

Yes — by video walk-through or in person by appointment; we provide a visa support letter for visits.

Do you have BSCI or OEKO-TEX?

No. They are planned, not held. We hold ISO 9001, SGS test reports and PFC-free DWR.

What should my first order look like to limit risk?

A paid sample, then the smallest bulk run the factory allows (ours: 30 pcs per design and colorway), with an inspection before the balance payment.
