TL;DR: A realistic MOQ for custom-made outdoor jackets from a Chinese factory is 30–100 pieces per design and colorway at a low-MOQ line, and 300–1,000+ at a large mill. Anything with “no MOQ” is print-on-demand decoration on a base jacket, not cut-and-sew to your spec. The number itself matters less than what it’s counted per (style, color, size) and what drives it (fabric roll minimums, trims, logo process). PTOUTWEAR runs MOQ 30 pcs per design and colorway, 1-piece samples at $100 refunded on bulk — so a first private-label run ties up roughly $660–780 before freight.
Data marked OUR FLOOR comes from our own production — PTOUTWEAR (Pt Outdoor Products Factory, est. 2013-12, Taizhou, Zhejiang: 240 workers, 20 sewing lines, ~200,000 jackets/year, ISO 9001 + SGS test reports). Data marked INDUSTRY is the typical published range across comparable China outerwear suppliers, for benchmarking. Prices are indicative FOB; our default trade term is EXW. What MOQ should I expect from a Chinese jacket factory?
30–100 pcs per design/color at a low-MOQ OEM line; 300–1,000+ at a large mill; 1 pc only for print-on-demand.
| Supplier type | Realistic MOQ | What you get at that MOQ | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print-on-demand | 1 pc | Your artwork on a base jacket | OUR FLOOR (digital/sublimation POD) |
| Paid sample | 1 pc | Your design, for approval | OUR FLOOR ($100, refunded on bulk) |
| Low-MOQ OEM line | 30 pcs (ours) / 25–100 (INDUSTRY) | Your fabric, fit, labels | OUR FLOOR / INDUSTRY |
| Mid-size OEM factory | 100–500 pcs | Same, lower unit price | INDUSTRY |
| Large mill / brand supplier | 1,000+ pcs | Same, best unit price, fabric developed for you | INDUSTRY |
Is MOQ per style, per color or per size?
Ask this first — the same “MOQ 100” can mean 100 jackets or 1,500. INDUSTRY-typical structures:
| MOQ counted per | Example: 3 colors × 5 sizes | Total pieces you must buy |
|---|---|---|
| Style (all colors combined) | 100 across 3 colors | 100 |
| Design & colorway (PTOUTWEAR) | 30 per color | 90 |
| Color at a 100-pc factory | 100 per color | 300 |
| Color and size | 100 per color per size | 1,500 |
What drives a jacket factory’s MOQ?
Fabric roll minimums, not sewing, set most MOQs. A line can sew 30 jackets easily; the mill selling custom-dyed fabric often can’t sell 60 meters. INDUSTRY-typical drivers:
| Driver | Why it raises MOQ | How to lower it |
|---|---|---|
| Custom-dyed fabric / custom color | Mill dye-lot minimums | Pick a stock color |
| Custom membrane or laminate | Lamination run minimums | Use the factory’s standard laminate |
| Branded trims (zip pulls, snaps, webbing) | Trim supplier minimums | Use stock trims + woven label |
| Sublimation or all-over print | Setup per design | Embroidery or heat transfer for small runs |
| Fully taped seams | More setup and QC time | Softshell or critically taped construction |
| Many sizes | Pieces spread thin per size | Narrow the size curve for run one |
Screen print and custom dyed-to-order base fabric only make sense at bulk; digital and sublimation print can run single-piece (OUR FLOOR, see print-on-demand).
How much cash does a first order tie up?
At MOQ 30, roughly $660–780 in product before freight — plus a $100 sample that comes back as credit. Indicative FOB softshell/windbreaker example:
| Order | Pieces | Indicative FOB/pc | Product cost | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 color, our MOQ | 30 | ~$22–26 | ~$660–780 | OUR FLOOR (MOQ), INDUSTRY (price) |
| 3 colors × 30 | 90 | ~$18–22 | ~$1,620–1,980 | INDUSTRY |
| 1 color, 100-pc factory | 100 | ~$18–22 | ~$1,800–2,200 | INDUSTRY |
| 3 colors × 100 | 300 | ~$16–19 | ~$4,800–5,700 | INDUSTRY |
Payment on bulk is 30% deposit to start, 70% before shipment (OUR FLOOR), so the cash actually leaving at order time on a 30-pc run is about $200–235.
Can I order below the MOQ?
Sometimes — expect a higher unit price, not a refusal, at a flexible factory. OUR FLOOR:
| Quantity | What happens | Unit price effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 pc | Paid sample, $100, refunded on bulk | — |
| 10–29 pcs | Negotiable case by case | typically +30–50% per unit |
| 30+ pcs | Standard MOQ | standard |
| 1,000 pcs, rush | ~2 weeks | +25% expedite fee |
FAQ
Is MOQ 30 realistic for fully custom jackets?
Yes, at a low-MOQ OEM line using stock fabric colors and standard trims. Custom-dyed fabric or custom trims can push the minimum up because of supplier minimums, not sewing.
Why do some factories quote MOQ 500 or 1,000?
Their lines and fabric sourcing are set up for volume; small runs interrupt the schedule. That’s a factory-type mismatch, not a sign the factory is bad.
Do reorders have the same MOQ?
Same MOQ, but faster — reorders run about 3 weeks because the pattern already exists (OUR FLOOR).
Does “no MOQ” mean fully custom?
No. No-MOQ means print-on-demand or blank stock with decoration. Cut-and-sew to your fabric and fit always has a minimum.
Are prices FOB or EXW?
Bands above are indicative FOB benchmarks. Our default term is EXW; FOB Ningbo or DDP quoted once we know your destination. See order terms.
